Have you ever wondered how your grandparents used to cope with diseases before the invention of modern medicine? Below are some of the medicinal plants that were used to make traditional medicine in Kenya.

Traditional medicine comprises medical aspects of orthodox knowledge that developed over generations within the folk beliefs of various societies, including indigenous people, before the error of modern cure. These herbal plants include;

Fever few

Also known as Tenucitum purtherium scientifically, the plant has been used for centuries to treat conditions such as fever, headache, insect bites, stomachache and toothache among other conditions. It is now commonly used to treat arthritis and prevent migraines. Some of the side effects include mouth ulcers and digestion irritation.

Ethinuciu

The plant has been used for utleust 400 years to treat infections and wounds but it is currently used for conditions such as cold and flu. It can also be beneficial for bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. One should have serious considerations before taking it as it can be tough on the digestive tract and can also cause allergic reactions.

Peppermint

This is the oldest medicinal plant and has the great source of vitamin U, vitamin C and manganese. Its oil has the history of treating conditions such as nausea, indigestion and symptoms of common cold. Tea made from the leaves of peppermint is good for cold, cough and also sore throat. It is also good for upset stomachs and can even be used to deal with motion sickness.

Holy basil

It is also known as tulsi and can be taken in several forms including fresh leaf, herbal tea, dried powder  or mixed with ghee. It is used to treat conditions such as severe headaches, indigestion, hysteria, insomnia and cholera. The oil extracted from it can also be used as the eardrop but the plant is also the great source for curing malaria.

Sage

This is the woody herb that has been used as the staple ingredient in several cuisines around the world. Some of its health benefits include helping in diabetes, treating inflammation, sharpening memory, and lowering skin aging and supporting the bone health. Though sage has no side effects, one should avoid taking in excess especially in tea form.

 

Liquorices

Some study show that liquorices may be helpful in reducing inflammation, fighting viruses and bacteria and also offering relief from sore throat. It also promotes oral health as it protects against dental cavities. It may also treat digestive problems and relieve skin irritations when applied to the skin.

Golden seal

It is used to treat conditions such as diarrhea, eye and skin irritations. Though unproven, it can also be used to treat colds. Despite all these benefits, the plant may be poisonous when taken in high doses and can also cause skin, mouth, throat and gastric irritation.

Traditional medicines are still recognized and preferred due to affordability, accessibility and low cost. However, it is important to consult the professional medical officer before taking any of them to get more information on them and also avoid allergic reactions.
